(T) How to encourage collaboration and discussion among students in a small language class?

Updated: Sep 23, 2023

***Encouraging collaboration and discussion among students in a small language class is super important to create a fun and productive learning environment. In small classes, each student can make a big impact on others, and we definitely want an active class with students involved in our activities and lessons. Let me share with you some tips I used***

1. Icebreakers and Warm-up Activities

Start each class with an icebreaker or warm-up activity that encourages students to interact with each other. For example, you could ask each student to share a personal story or experience related to the topic of the day.

2. Pair work or Group Work

Divide students into small groups and assign them a task that requires collaboration and discussion. This could be a role-play activity, a debate, or a problem-solving exercise. Encourage each group to share their ideas and opinions with the class.

3. Class Discussions

Use class discussions to encourage students to express their opinions and ideas about the topic being discussed. Ask open-ended questions that encourage critical thinking and invite students to share their thoughts and experiences. You might want to have them translate/create lyrics for a song in their native language.

4. Peer Feedback

Encourage students to provide feedback to their peers during group work or pair work activities. This can help students develop their communication skills and build their confidence in speaking English.

5. Games and Activities

Use games and activities to encourage collaboration and discussion among students. For example, you could play a vocabulary game or a role-playing game that requires students to communicate with each other. Two truths and a lie could also be a good game.

Overall, the key is to create a safe and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing their ideas and collaborating with their peers.
